Course Update – Board Report – August 2023

GREENS RENOVATIONS

Important preparation work for our upcoming Greens Coring Renovation Program has been in progress in the lead up weeks. The preparation work has included detailed soil testing to ascertain the nutrient status that identifies any deficiencies that require correction, selective nutrient inputs to stimulate turfgrass growth and recovery, detailed scanning and physical removal of any existing Winter grass (Poa annua) plant existence that avoid the need to use chemicals and their associated risks, together with the servicing and set-up of all mechanical equipment and tools required to undertake the program. All is now well set and we hope the climatic conditions present with minimal challenges to enable a successful program outcome.

Members are reminded that our annual greens coring renovations will take place on the following dates in the coming weeks. Please note the course under renovation will be closed during this program.

North Course
– Monday 28th August
– Tuesday 29th August
– Wednesday 30th August

South Course
– Monday 4th September
– Tuesday 5th September
– Wednesday 6th September

Undertaking the renovations in back-to-back weeks will have the greens all under recovery at the same time, but beneficial in that it will only have the one impact on members and leave the main growing season clear of invasive maintenance practices.

Putting Green Renovation
As part of our pre program preparation to test all the tools and process, the North Course main putting green will be renovated. This is planned for Thursday 24th and Friday 25th August. This green will remain closed until all the North Course greens have been completed. The other putting greens will be open and available during these days.

Process and Recovery Times
The program of our green renovations will be similar to previous seasons. The process will consist of coring the greens (10mm hollow tine), apply amendments to correct any soil deficiencies or to benefit turf health, apply sand then a deeper verti draining of the greens profile (8mm solid tine) to complete the program. The full recovery time of the greens will be approximately 4-6 weeks. Please note this is a vital yearly task that must be undertaken to ensure our greens remain at a consistently high standard all year round.

OUR UNIQUE GREEN EDGES

PK is one of only a few clubs worldwide that maintain greens to the bunker edge. In the video below, Glenn Stuart – Director of Courses, shows the behind-the-scenes process and detail that our skilled greenkeepers perform, which then enables PK to present our world-renowned green complexes.

Timber Sleeper Treatment

Another key focus over the past month has been the treatment of our timber sleepers and bridges using a non-slip adhesive. This product is applied by the Course Team and will continue over the next few weeks.

Bunker Repairs and Maintenance

As reported in previous reports, our continued high focus in bunker repairs and maintenance continues with good progress. The past winter months have seen many bunker edge repairs achieved and also a continuation on bunker entry points. See photos below on some repairs undertaken.
