Thursday 7th February saw the commencement of the Women’s golf year for 2019 at Peninsula Kingswood. The day was complimented by pleasant weather conditions and by playing two excellently prepared courses. There were 175 players and over 185 women attended lunch.
The format for the competition was Canadian Foursomes – Stableford, with an 18 hole competition played on the North course and 9 hole competition on the South course.
Winners of the 18 hole competition were: Pat Thorpe and Leanne Anthony, Sue Robertson and Janelle Haig with a combined score of 64 points.
Winners of the 9 hole competition were: Ro Pitt and Wendy McComas, Gill Thomas and Annabelle Scanlon with a combined score of 33 points.
Congratulations to the winners.
Lunch in our new club house followed golf, and this was accommodated in the Club Bar. The Hospitality Team are to be complimented on the setting up of the room, the presentation and the quality of the food.
Women’s President, Libby Stuckey and Women’s Captain, Jenny Picking welcomed everyone and outlined the programme for the year ahead.
Libby introduced three speakers – Stella Cugley who spoke about Women’s membership initiatives, Kerry Hosking who talked about the Bridge programme and Judy Sutherland who updated us on Lawn Bowls.
The special guest for the day was Johanna Wyllie who is a member of our club and a Pennant player. Johanna is currently the World Youth Left Handed Golf Champion. She is traveling to Germany in May to defend her title. We are delighted to support Johanna by raising funds for her trip.
During lunch, Jenny interviewed Johanna like a seasoned media professional, which provided insight into Johanna’s 24 year life and her golfing history. The women members very generously donated to several raffles conducted on the day, with the proceeds going to Johanna. One raffle raised over $1,300 alone. Two other raffles will be continuing for a few weeks to enable those who would still like to contribute, to do so. One prize is a hamper, generously donated by Gillian Franklin and the other is for a game of golf at Peninsula Kingswood for one member and three guests. Tickets are $5.00 each and are available in the Club Bar.
The enthusiasm and camaraderie evident on our Opening Day will certainly stand our women’s golfing year in good stead.
